Description:
This section of the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from Mexico to Canada, is in the Laguna Recreation Area and offers expansive views of the desert to the east, nearly 4000 feet below. It is on the eastern escarpment of the Lagunas and is unique in its sharp transition between mountain and desert environments. You will intermittently hike through the coolness of mountain mahogany, Coulter and Jeffrey pines, black oak and manzanita, but are frequently reminded of the heat and wind currents arising from the desert, particularly in the spring and summer months. The Desert View Picnic Area is a dramatic access point and is near the village of Mount Laguna, which has a restaurant/bar (open on weekends), post office, store, rental cabins and the Visitor Information Center (can purchase Adventure Pass here), water and restrooms.
